Ranking: Which Scandinavian club was the most profitable over the last three years?

  • Off The Pitch has ranked Scandinavian clubs’ profitability numbers in the last three years to see which side in the region has been the most profitable.
  • Profitability numbers across Europe have plummeted in recent years, but some Scandinavian teams have managed to run profitable businesses despite the negative impact of the pandemic.
  • In total, EBIT has been declining for Scandinavian clubs in recent years, resulting in a significant deficit in 2020.
  • On the positive side, most of the clubs have had positive EBIT margins, and surprisingly, have been able to increase them substantially in 2020. But which have been the most and least profitable?

The business of football is often referred to as being a bad business, and in most cases, not a profitable one. More than half of the 229 European clubs have accumulated a loss after tax over the last three years and in that period have had a combined loss of €4.1 billion. 

The talk is mostly focused on the big leagues, which have been characterised by tremendously high wages, whopping transfer fees and big financial losses in recent years.
