Analysis: How well do financial measures explain performance?

  • Football is a sport marked by luck and random outcomes, especially in the short run. However, in the long run, we expect teams with larger budgets to win more often, as they will be able to attract better players. 
  • 47 English clubs have been examined to see how certain financial measures can explain clubs’ average league positions over the ten-year period 2010/11 to 2019/20.
  • The approach draws inspiration from Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski's book, Soccernomics, in which a similar analysis was conducted for the years 2003 to 2012.
