Analysis: Which smaller clubs pay the most in wages?

  • When talking about the large amounts of money involved in the world of football, the focus is often on the big clubs. 
  • However, it is worth shifting that focus away from the top and towards clubs considered smaller from a financial perspective. 
  • In this analysis, attention turns to clubs with an average turnover below €50 million between the 2017/18 and 2019/20 seasons. We compare these clubs to see which have, on average, paid the most in wages.

Whopping wages, tremendous transfer fees, and deep debts. These are all points of criticism levelled at the world of football, and it is the big clubs in particular who are condemned for spending too much.

However, these clubs also generate more money and so are better able to afford it. Instead, it might be time to move the spotlight towards the smaller clubs who do not earn as much - but still spend a lot.
