Media: Liverpool in advanced talks with Nike to secure biggest-ever Premier League kit deal
12 April 2019
Nike is offering a kit deal to Liverpool expected to be worth more than the biggest current Premier League agreement - Manchester United’s 10-year £750 million Adidas contract, ESPN and Daily Mail reports
Liverpool’s current £45 million-a-year deal with New Balance expires at the end of the 2019/20 season
Liverpool are in advanced talks with Nike over a new kit deal which could become the Premier League’s most valuable, ESPN and Daily Mail reported.
The kit deal offered by Nike is reported to exceed the value of Manchester United’s £750 million contract with Adidas over 10 years, which is the league’s most valuable such agreement currently.
Sources with knowledge of the negotiations have told ESPN that Nike is leading the battle to secure the Liverpool contract despite the club’s current kit sponsors, New Balance, having a matching clause in their deal with the Merseyside club, enabling them to match any rivalling offers.
Liverpool’s deal with New Balance is worth £45 million a year and expires at the end of the 2019/20 season.
According to ESPN, the club has also held discussions with Adidas and Puma.
Way behind Spanish mastodons
Despite the possibly massive value of the new deal, the club would still be some way behind Spanish sides FC Barcelona and Real Madrid who hold the world’s most valuable deals at the moment.
FC Barcelona last year signed a kit deal worth £1 billion with Nike, while Real Madrid’s arrangement with Adidas is worth £980 million. Both deals run over ten years.
Premier League and Champions League rivals Manchester City in February signed a kit deal worth £650 million over ten years with Puma. Arsenal’s kit deal with Adidas is worth £300 million over five years, Chelsea’s with Nike is worth £900 million over 15 years while Tottenham’s Nike deal is worth £450 million over 15 years.
Liverpool have told the Daily Mail that they are not yet close to signing an agreement with Nike.
