FC Copenhagen boss: ”We reject to build our new Women’s Football team with a CSR-mindset. It has to be commercially attractive from Day 1”
- This summer, FC Copenhagen's women's football team will play its first match in the third tier of Danish football. For FC Copenhagen CEO Jacob Lauesen, it is essential that the women's team is distinct from the men's team.
- "When I look at the various projects around Europe in women’s football, I see a lot of passion, but also what – if I should be a bit harsh – could be described as bad copies of the men’s team."
- Why it matters: FC Copenhagen recently qualified from the Champions League group stages, finishing above Manchester United. Last year, they made one of the biggest profits in European football.
- The perspective: Many football clubs invested heavily in e-sports but saw few commercial benefits, leading many to cut ties. Lauesen believes financial sustainability is crucial for women's football.
Jacob Lauesen begins with a disclaimer: Since FC Copenhagen’s women's football team hasn’t played a single match yet, some might be skeptical of criticism from someone unproven in women’s football.
“I understand that it’s always easier to talk about what you want to do than to execute it. But I agreed to give an interview about women’s football because it is very important to me and everyone working in this club,” says Lauesen.
