Premier League's January net spend more than double that of last year

While the level of spending exceeded that of last year's January transfer window by just around £15 million, clubs sold players for a significantly smaller amount than they did last year.

Clubs are not prepared to sign players "at any cost," according to a football finance expert.

The average price per player rose by 12 per cent.
