Last season was the worst in the 117-year history of Real Sporting de Gijón.

The club from the Asturias region of northern Spain finished 17th in Segunda División. It is a long way from the 1970s and 80s, when Gijón were runners-up in the top division and twice lost Copa del Rey finals. They were regulars in the top tier of Spanish football until the late 90s.
