Sunderland confirm Parkinson's appointment

51-year-old Phil Parkinson has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the club and is joined by his assistant, Steve Parkin.

The former player, who most recently coached Bolton Wanderers, has achieved promotion on three occasions during his 16-year managerial career.

Aiming for a return to the Championship, Sunderland have appointed Phil Parkinson as their manager after Jack Ross was sacked just last week. 

Parkinson, a former player at Southampton, Bury and Reading, most recently managed Bolton Wanderers but resigned when the club's financial situation deteriorated. 

He has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light and is joined by his assistant, Steve Parkin.
