More substitutions are coming to Serie A as the national football federation has requested an increase from the current three per match to five.

The change has already been made in the lower Italian divisions.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) wishes to increase the number of substitutions allowed per match in Serie A from three to five.

This move will make the Italian top flight diverge further from the other top-tier leagues in Europe - it already allows 12 substitutes on the bench, the norm being seven, which is true of the Premier League, La Liga and Ligue 1

Prior to the current season, a new rule was applied to the German Bundesliga, allowing the teams to have nine players on the bench in official matches.
