Profitable 16 years in a row – now owner of multi-club group in Mexico is on the search for a club in England or Spain

  • Entrepreneur Alejandro Irarragorri runs Orlegi Sports, which includes three Mexican football clubs. The last purchased club won the title in Mexico 3 months ago for the first time in 70 years.
  • The clubs have grown off the pitch and found success on it and the group is now eyeing expansion with a team in England or Spain.
  • Why it matters: A growing number of owners see multi-club ownership as the most financially sustainable way of investing in football.
  • The perspective: Orlegi Sports have been successful in one country. Can their model work across international borders?

"What we did is not magical," says Alejandro Irarragorri, the founder of Mexican conglomerate Grupo Orlegi. But for fans of Santos Laguna and Atlas F.C., it might feel like magic.

Orlegi Sports, the sporting arm of Grupo Orlegi, controls the two clubs, who play in Mexico's Liga MX. They also own a third club, Tampico Madero Fútbol Club, who play in the second-tier Liga de Expansión MX.
