According to several media sources, numerous managers are being considered as replacements for Benitez, whose contract expires at the end of June.

Steven Gerrard, Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira are all top priorities on the shortlist, but the underdogs might end up taking the spotlight.

Newcastle United are yet to contact any of their managerial targets, according to reports.

As Newcastle are just days away from officially not having a manager, The Telegraph reports that a shortlist, with Premier League legends Steven Gerrard, Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira as favourites to replace Benitez, has been made.

But it is doubtful that any of the candidates are willing to take over at St. James Park. Gerrard has insisted he will stay on as manager at Rangers after a solid first season. Vieira has done a decent job at Nice in his first year in the south of France and has made no official statement that he is planning to leave.
