Manchester United have 1.1 billion fans and followers globally according to a new survey - a 67 per cent increase in seven years.

The online survey's inferences are based on responses from 54,000 people.

According to a newly published survey, Manchester United have a worldwide base of 1.1 billion fans and followers.

This makes Manchester United the "world's most popular club," the club claim in a press release - despite the lack of success on the pitch in recent years, including last season's sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

Kantar, the research agency behind the survey, however, refrains from giving United the definite title, but describes the club as "one of the world's most successful and well-known sports teams" in a blog post on the matter.
