Italy’s biggest clubs incurred huge losses on the back of the Covid-19 outbreak and now, years later, rates of recovery vary, with wildly different financial results in 2024.
Juventus have lost over €850 million in the last five seasons – and haven’t won the Scudetto since 2020.
Why it matters: In the 1990s, Serie A was often regarded as the world’s best league, but a number of financial scandals and the explosive growth of the Premier League has reduced Serie A’s attractiveness.
The perspective: Despite a dip in the domestic TV deal, there are positive signs, with five Italian clubs in the newly expanded Champions League and a glut of teams competing at the top of Serie A this season.

As Inter Milan secured their 20th Serie A title earlier this year, it would have been easy to wonder if Italian football has now entered a new era. After nine uninterrupted domestic titles, last season marked the fourth consecutive year that the Old Lady of Turin, Juventus, had failed to win Italy’s domestic title.
In that span, this year’s win was Inter’s second title, sandwiching wins by neighbours AC Milan
