Villa financial probe throws up governance dilemmas for Premier League and EFL

Aston Villa may escape major punishment for any breaches of the EFL’s Financial Fair Play rules now they are promoted to the Premier League.

That’s the view of football finance expert Kieran Maguire who believes the Premier League will not hit Villa with a points deduction – if an EFL investigation finds they have flouted profit and sustainability regulations.

Maguire tells OffThePitch.com that Premier League bosses are “not duty-bound” to implement any points deduction handed down by the EFL, saying they would resist doing so.
