UK gambling sponsorship ban hangs in the balance amidst summer of political turmoil

UK government ban on sports betting sponsorships was just “days away” when Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister in June, delaying a decision and allowing “cynical” clubs to sign new deals.

Sources tell Off The Pitch that long awaited government white paper on gambling will see light of day under Liz Truss. EPL say they are supportive of the government’s objectives and have talked with clubs about a voluntary ban.

Why it matters: Gaming sponsorships are worth at least £100 million to the UK football economy, but campaigners say the public mood has swung in favour of a ban, like that in Spain.

The perspective: The anticipated influence of former Tory party leader Iain Duncan-Smith – who has said he will “go to war” on the issue – is expected to see a revival of tighter legislation or force clubs into self-regulation.
