Two short statements from Everton and EPL left stakeholders in the dark: “We’re all waiting to see EPL’s new direction in this area”

Late last Friday, the Premier League made public that a commission would decide whether Everton FC should be punished for breaching the league's P&S rules.

Both the EPL and Everton released very short statements without opening the way for any questions. The problem is that no one knows how the Premier League has adjusted its profitability and sustainability rules.

Why it matters: Everton could face a strong punishment, and ultimately be relegated due to that penalty. It would be a historic decision – but there is still no transparency around the case.

The perspective: Actually, English clubs’ financial reporting is much more transparent than in most other countries. But club owners tend to keep information to themselves around business issues – leaving them unnecessarily vulnerable to criticism.
