Surprising statement by Sheffield Wednesday owner as arch-rivals Sheffield United secure promotion

Photo: Getty Images Dejphon Chansiri has been the owner of Sheffield Wednesday since January 2015. A consurtium led by Chansiri acquired a 100% stake from Milan Mandaric for £37.5 million. Chansiri's family controls the Thai Union Group which is the world's largest producer of canned tuna.

The Owls saw rivals Sheffield United reach promotion this weekend, and the Sheffield Wednesday owner, Dejphon Chansiri, came with a sensational statement.

Supporters are furious with the club’s owner.

Since the two Sheffield clubs first met on 15th December 1890, the rivalry has been fierce. The Steel City Derby divides the city in two, and as Sheffield United secured promotion to Premier League this weekend, the bitterness of seeing Wednesday’s rivals going up is bad news enough for the supporters.

But to make things worse, Sheffield Wednesday owner, Dejphon Chansiri, seems to have rubbed salt in the collective wound of The Owls’ supporters. In a statement on the club’s webpage, Chansiri congratulates Sheffield United on their promotion:
