On Thursday the European Court of Justice (CJEU) delivers its verdict on the European Super League case, offering the prospect of era-defining changes to football.

Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, representing A22 against UEFA, has run some of the biggest EU sports law cases of the past three decades. His career reflects how legal expertise can influence major sporting policies and practices.

Why it matters: The changes brought about by Dupont’s cases have had huge socio-economic implications, influencing everything from player salaries and club finances to fan engagement and the overall commercial structure of football.

The perspective: Dupont disagrees with the idea of a European sports model, describing it as “a euphemism, a politically correct expression, intended to disguise the reality, namely the ‘UEFA/FIFA monopoly’.”

In 1990 a meeting between a young Belgian lawyer and a journeyman footballer set in motion one of the most far-reaching changes in football history.

Jean-Marc Bosman was a 25-year-old midfielder with Standard Liege, who had been priced out of a move by his club, dumped in the reserves and given a 75 per cent pay cut. Jean-Louis Dupont was a lawyer of the same age, who was combining his nascent career in sport law with a job at the European Commission.
