Column: Premier League's strict measures on Everton: A necessary response to Moshiri's 'sustainable' plan

Everton have been deducted 10 points because the Merseyside club breached the English Premier League (EPL) Profitability and Sustainability regulations by £19.5 million.

The sanction is unprecedented but shows the Premier League are drawing a new benchmark to sanction clubs for operating outside its rule book. And don’t forget that the initial overspending gave Everton the best start to a season for more than 100 years.

Why it matters: The EPL have never provided such a sporting sanction – only three clubs have previously been docked points in the competition’s history.

Club allegiances aside, and in the cold light of the November sun, Everton’s sanction for breaching the English Premier Leagues Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) rules is not as complicated as many are making out. To quote Rafa Benitez – even though he was the manager of arch-rivals Liverpool at the time – these are the facts!
