New model sheds fresh light on football club valuations

Leading football finance academic has created a new valuation model for football clubs.

Sheffield Hallam University’s Rob Wilson says the work provides “a much better, more effective model of measuring holistic investability of football clubs.”

Why it matters: Sports franchises don’t have a standard valuation model and recent takeovers have highlighted the apparent arbitrariness of prices.

The perspective: New Milan owner Gerry Cardinale was previously critical of club valuation models, saying they “lacked rigour” and were “taken from Forbes magazine.”

One of the UK’s leading academics specialising in the business of sport has created a new modelling system to value football clubs.

Dr Rob Wilson, head of finance, accounting and business systems at Sheffield Hallam University, says the work provides “a much better, more effective model of measuring holistic investability of football clubs” and that the model could be rolled out for other sports franchises.
