Infantino’s dream of 48 teams in the 2022 Qatar World Cup crashes

FIFA has concluded the 2022 World Cup in Qatar can’t be expanded to 48 teams, even if they involved neighbouring countries.

Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, was ready to lower key FIFA requirements to make the expansion possible.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has long had a dream of expanding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams from the original 32 teams, but after trying almost anything to make it a reality, the time has come for the 49-year-old Swiss-Italian to surrender his dream. 

A statement on FIFA’s website says: 

“Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now.”
