FIFA President Gianni Infantino has long had a dream of expanding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams from the original 32 teams, but after trying almost anything to make it a reality, the time has come for the 49-year-old Swiss-Italian to surrender his dream.

A statement on FIFA’s website says:

“Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now.”
