Stadium of the Week: Head-to-head Stamford Bridge vs Molineux
23 July 2020
This week’s Stadium of the Week, a weekly collaboration between Off The Pitch and Buro Happold, brings us back to the Premier League as Chelsea and Wolves go head to head.
Stamford Bridge comes in at 24th in the Overall VPR rankings, outperforming Molineux Stadium on all fronts, which ranks 67th. It is perhaps due to Wolves’ inconsistent presence in the Premier League that their stadium is yet to undergo large renovation.
Hence it still performs more similarly to Championship stadiums like Stoke City's Bet365 stadium or Fulham’s Craven Cottage.
Both Stamford Bridge and Molineux are old stadiums in design with primary square stands. However, the most notable difference, is that Molineux still has exposed open corners and the stands are set back from the pitch.
This reduces the stadiums impact and experience, as not only does it limit capacity, 10,000 fewer seats, but also impairs the volume of sound that reaches the pitch. In addition, the stands are completely separated, limiting concourse space and potential matchday revenues.
Wolves should look to capitalise on their success on the field to improve their underperforming stadium to help cement their position as a top Premier League team.
