Forecast 2021/22: European football set to top pre-pandemic turnover levels

Based on the 2021/22 half-year reports of eight listed clubs, we have tried to predict the financial state of European football this season.

We estimate that turnover will be above pre-pandemic figures. However, due to the slow transfer market, profitability figures are still below the years unaffected by the coronavirus.

Why it matters: The pandemic has taken its toll on the football industry by crushing revenue streams, and making the industry even more volatile than before.

The perspective: If the football industry can bounce back from the severe financial impact of the pandemic as quickly as it seems to be doing, we could expect continuous growth in the next few years.

As the last big league in Europe to do so, the Bundesliga is finally set to have stadium restrictions lifted at the end of March, and with that, the pandemic seems to have approached an end for the European football industry.

But does that mean goodbye to tight financials and hello to revenue growth as early as the current season?
