Column: Nobody has flipped the question to ask - would the Super League be good for European football?

The same people who criticised clubs for their greed are quite happy to see the Premier League destroy European football for the sake of their own leagues’ continued growth.

It’s not just about Premier League revenues. What’s simmering in the background is threatening to make the Premier League even bigger - a development that is exactly what opponents to the Super League were fighting against.

The Saudi takeover of Newcastle is only going to expand the power and growth potential of the Premier League. There are no signs that other leagues are capable of keeping up with the number-one British league.

Fans want to see a competitive balance where no club is safe from relegation, they want to see more money filtering down to the European leagues, and for every club to be able to play among the elite one day.

The 18th of April 2021 will live long in the memory. For many that was the turning point on our international owners with many experts saying they’d had enough of the greed and self preservation in elite competition.

Gary Neville’s rant will go down in history along with the great Kevin Keegan, (I love it) however the message he was shouting was full of misconcept
