Despite winning the league both seasons he was in charge, Valverde's two successive Champions League failures proved to be one too many for Barcelona's board.

Quique Setién, the former coach of clubs like Real Betis and Las Palmas, has been hired on a two-year contract.

Barcelona have terminated their contract with the club's head coach, Ernesto Valverde, and hired the former coach of clubs like Real Betis and Las Palmas, Quique Setién, as his replacement on a two-year contract.

The announcement comes after Barcelona failed to win the Spanish Super Cup last week, having dropped out in the semi-finals, though the Catalan club currently find themselves in first place in La Liga Santander and have advanced to the Champions League semi-finals too.
