2020/2021 was another financial nightmare for Championship clubs

The Championship clubs have piled up enormous debts, incurred huge losses and have the highest wages-to-revenue levels of all leagues in Europe with an average of 148.1 per cent.

Parachute payments have pumped up revenue for relegated clubs, which has saved them from massive losses and increased their chances of promotion.

Why it matters: The financial situation in the Championship has pushed several clubs to the brink of bankruptcy.

The perspective: Championship clubs are pursuing a path of unhealthy competition to reach the Premier League. Derby County are a prime example of what happens when the financial structure of a club is solely dependent on a wealthy owner.

The Championship has long been known as a league with big financial issues. And it was no different last year when the EFL had to hand out points deductions several times due to breaches of the sustainability rules as well as Derby County entering administration.

We have looked at the 2020/21 financial accounts of the Championship clubs to analyse how bad the situation has been for them during the worst period of the pandemic.
