Newly-released financial statements reveal a massive sustainability gap between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona

This Saturday Real Madrid held their Ordinary General Meeting where representative members approved the 2020/2021 annual report by a big majority.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have been performing quite similarly on the pitch in recent years, but the new financial statements show that Real Madrid is undoubtedly outperforming FC Barcelona off the pitch.

While FC Barcelona displayed a loss before tax in 2021 of €555 million, Real Madrid achieved a small profit, which is impressive given the huge negative Covid-19 impact on the football industry.

FC Barcelona have one of the highest net debts and financial obligations in the world of football. In contrast, Real Madrid have negative net debt and much lower financial obligations.

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona have long been fierce rivals, and their performance on the pitch is always compared down to the smallest of details. Last season, Barca finishing 3rd in LaLiga just behind Real Madrid.
