Revealed: Manchester City have 73 per cent of Premier League’s associated sponsorships

  • Off The Pitch surveyed more than 350 partnerships and tested them against Premier League’s new rules on associated partnerships. We found there were just 15 such deals likely to come under scrutiny. 11 of them are linked to Man City, including three new.
  • Everton, Leicester City and Crystal Palace also have linked sponsorship deals that would need scrutiny by the EPL board.
  • Why it matters: Deals linked with club owners came under renewed scrutiny since Newcastle’s takeover by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund. The EPL amended its rules in December to make them more robust.
  • The perspective: Updated EPL rules represent “a step further” than existing regulations that have been in place at UEFA level for many years, but legal challenges may test their robustness.
