Atalanta’s finest ever season sees them qualified for the Champions League for the third year and disrupting Italian football’s established powers.
President Antonio Percassi and son, CEO Luca, started out as Atalanta players before forging successful business careers.
Since Antonio took over in 2010 Atalanta have invested heavily in youth and stadium infrastructure and are reaping rewards now as one of Europe’s few clubs to retain profit during the pandemic.
As the Italian season drew to a close last week, a thorn remained in the side of two of Italy’s biggest clubs – as it had done all season.
On Wednesday, Juventus needed to beat Atalanta to win the Coppa Italia and save something from a wretched season, as well as manager Andrea Pirlo’s job. Milan, on the other hand, needed to beat Atalanta on Sunday to return to the Champions League after a gap of eight years and stave off another season of eye-watering financial losses.
