Patricia Rodríguez Barrios has a strategic plan focused on maximising revenues from the stadium and internationalisation.

The club from the Alicante region will see its income increase five-fold this season after being promoted to LaLiga. In 2015 the club was relegated from La Liga due to unpaid debt.

"We are in a healthy financial situation – we are planning to invest and develop the different business areas of the club," Rodríguez tells offthepitch.com.

The only female CEO in LaLiga, she wants to blaze a trail for others: "We need more women in the top leadership positions in sport".

When Patricia Rodríguez Barrios became chief executive of Elche CF in June last year, one of her first tasks was to design a strategic plan. But there are some things you can't plan for.

In her first season overseeing the Spanish club in the second-tier Segunda División, the main sporting objective was to avoid relegation. Excluding clubs newly-promoted from the third-tier Segunda División B, Elche's budget was the division's lowest.
